NJSIAA Eligibility Rules

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) has adopted the following regulations concerning a student-athlete’s eligibility for participation for high school athletics. These eligibility rules apply to all freshman, sophomore, junior varsity and varsity teams.

AGE – A student is considered ELIGIBLE if he or she has not reached the age of 19 before September 1st. For freshman teams, a student is considered ELIGIBLE if he or she has not reached the age of 16 before September 1st.

CREDIT HOURS – A student is considered ELIGIBLE for a fall or winter sport if he or she has passed 27.5 credits during the immediately preceding academic year. This rule does not apply to freshmen. A student is considered ELIGIBLE for a spring sport if he or she has passed 13.75 credits at the close of the preceding semester.

EIGHT SEMESTER RULE – A student is ELIGIBLE for a total of eight semesters from the time he or she first enters 9th grade. A student is NOT ELIGIBLE after the class in which he or she originally enrolled graduates.

Sports Physicals

Any student participating in an athletic activity MUST have a sports physical completed prior to the first practice session. Athletic physicals are good for 365 days. If your physical exam was done more than 60 days prior to the first practice session, a Pre-Participation Physical Examination Form, Part A (Health History Questionnaire) must be filled out. These can be obtained in the Main Office, the Nurse’s Office, or at www.NJSIAA.org (forms to download).

This form requires the parent to list any illnesses/injuries that occurred between the time the physical was done and the start of the next sport. If any injury or illness did occur after the physical was done,
further medical clearance is required.

Sports Physicals Procedure

Sports physical packets are available from your coach or from the main office. All athletic forms are available online.

  1. A parent/guardian must read and sign the “Athletic Permission Form”.
  2. The “Athletic Pre-Participation Physical Examination Form, Part A: Health History Questionnaire” (available at www.NJSIAA.org (forms to download) or the school main office) is to be completed by the parent/guardian and student.
  3. The “Athletic Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation Form, Part B:  Physical Examination“(available at www.NJSIAA.org (forms to download) or the school main office) is to be filled out by the examining physician.

Both forms are to be submitted to the school nurse where the school physician will review them and grant medical clearance by signing the physical examination form as well as a parent letter. The physical examination form is to be returned to the nurse.
  4. The “Athletic/Co-Curricular Contract” (at www.manvilleschools.org, Manville High School, Athletics, or the school main office) needs to be signed by both student and parent and returned to the coach.
  5. An “Emergency Card” is also to be completed by both student and parent and given to your coach. This card can only be obtained at the High School Main Office or at www.manvilleschools.org, Manville High School, Athletics.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
NO STUDENT MAY PARTICIPATE (PRACTICE OR PLAY) IN ANY SPORT UNTIL THESE FORMS ARE COMPLETED.
