The Wee Deliver Program was designed by the United States Postal Service. It teaches students about all of the civil service jobs available as part of the Postal Service. At Weston School, each third grade class undertakes the unit of study and at the end of their studies take a civil service exam. The highest scoring students become postmasters. Each third grade class is responsible for the school postal service for a two month period. During that time students in the class assume the various roles required to cancel, sort and deliver mail. Every classroom in the school has an address. A directory of those addresses and the names of all students in a class are available in every room. Third graders are expected to write a friendly letter as homework over every weekend of the school year. Mr. Gallagher's class is compiling the directory and we hope to be up and running before October 2009. In October, the assignment is extended to all second graders. In January we add first grade. Students can write to classmates, friends or relatives in other classes, students from their buddy classes, teachers and office staff, even the principal. They learn to address envelopes and use stickers as stamps. Letters are mailed in a real mailbox located across from the main office. Twice a week the mail is delivered to mailboxes in each classroom. If parents want to write their child a letter, your child's teacher can tell you their address and once you put a sticker on the envelope, you can drop it in our mailbox. Students take their postal service roles seriously and do a good job of delivering mail. In addition to friendly letters, the Wee Deliver program is used to deliver photos to students from school events.
