B.A. Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities
Ms. Amanda Rasmussen
Hello! My name is Amanda Rasmussen and 2019-2020 is my second year teaching at Manville High School!
I graduated from Kean University in 2008 with a BA in Special Education. After graduation, I worked as a long-term substitute teacher in Woodbridge Township for two years before temporarily relocating to North Carolina. During my time in NC, I worked as a case manager for KidsPeace, a national non-profit organization that provides mental and behavioral health services to children and adolescents in crisis. Shortly after the birth of my son in 2013, I returned to New Jersey so that he would be able to grow up close to our family. I returned to the classroom during the 2017-2018 school year as the MD teacher at The Developmental Learning Center in New Providence. At the start of the 2018-2019 school year, I joined the MHS faculty and I couldn't be happier to be part of such a wonderful district!
This year, in class, we will be covering various pieces of Literature, Human Biology, The Basic Elements of Algebra, Real World Math, and U.S. History. In addition to academics, a functional curriculum of social skills, life skills, vocational skills, and growth mindset will be incorporated into our daily activities.
Begining this year, I am also teaching a course called "Unified Peer Leadership" that will encourage socialization and job skill development in my students through consistent interactions with same aged peers. This class is ideal for students who have expressed interest in future careers in education, therapeutic services, or other direct care professions. I look forward to all that will come from the Unifed Peer Leadership program at Manville High School!
Outside of the classroom, my hobbies are generally centered around art, music, and cooking. I am currently studying at Georgian Court University with the goal of obtaining my Masters in Education with a specialized focus in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I enjoy having the opportunity to share my personal passions with my students in the classroom and I encourage them to do the same!
