• Poetry

Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define (Flanagan).

You will be creating a poetry slam which is a competitive art of performance poetry.  It puts dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it.  A poetry slam in an event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience.

As we explore poetry in this unit, we will see the effective ways poems can speak to our emotions, personal dreams, and the messaging that a poet wishes to convey.  We will be transforming our classroom into a vintage coffeehouse where we will share out original poems and let the audience decide who will take home the "poetry slam" title.
