A lifelong Manville resident and proud graduate of the Class of 1981, Debra Babich has deep roots in the community; her children, nephews, and now her grandson have all attended and graduated from Manville schools. Inspired by her family’s legacy, she joined the Board of Education to ensure “Every Child, Every Day” receives a fair and strong education.

Debra is especially passionate about improving student success in Math, ELA, and ESL, and she loves seeing students’ smiles when they reach their goals, whether in academics, sports, music, or beyond.

Outside of education, Debra treasures time with her family (especially her grandson Jackson) and has a surprising pet... a scorpion named Venom (or Scorpy, according to Jackson)!

Her advice to students: “Keep pushing toward your goals, and don’t be afraid to ask for help, it’s not weakness, it’s strength.”

Q: What inspired you to serve on Manville’s Board of Education?
Debbie: My family has a long history in Manville schools—my children, nephews, and now my grandson have all attended. I graduated from Manville High School in 1981, and my family’s ties go back even further. I want to make sure every student has the opportunity to succeed after graduation and achieve anything they set their minds to.

Q: What is one goal you hope to accomplish during your term?
Debbie: I’m focused on seeing continued improvement in Math, ELA, and ESL. Every child deserves a fair education, and as a district, we work hard to set meaningful goals so that all of our students, no matter their background, can succeed.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being involved in education?
Debbie: The kids! I love watching them succeed—whether it’s in academics, sports, music, drama, or any other area. Their smiles when they achieve something make it all worthwhile. Manville has a dedicated staff, and I love being part of the team that helps our students reach their dreams.

Q: Can you share a fun fact or hobby people might not know about you?
Debbie: I actually have a pet scorpion named Venom! My grandson Jackson calls him “Scorpy.” Most people would never guess that about me. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and I hope to do some traveling with them in the future.

Q: What advice would you give to the students in our district?
Debbie: Keep pushing yourself toward your goals, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength and determination. Everyone here wants to see you succeed.

Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our schools right now—and how can we overcome it?
Debbie: Communication. We’re working hard to get information out to everyone—students, families, and staff—and we want to continue improving so that we’re reaching and supporting all members of our community.
